The origin of Douchebag Fan of the Week was to call out ridiculous fan behavior across this great, big sports world. But, RDK, I tell you here, I tell you now, there’s nothing more douchetastic than claiming championship hardware that you absolutely did not win. Whether it be a fan, couch, program, manager, janitor or front office Asian masseuse (Hi, Vikki), it’s just plain douchey.
You’re probably thinking, “What team or program would have Dirt Monkey so riled up?” Well, you’re probably not because you read the headline, but I can’t remember that far back. Anyway, yes, it’s everyone’s favorite yellow-toothed salesman Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns.
How? Well, a strong RDKer sent us a link to a Texas recruitment video (1:18, 1:36 marks). Really, it doesn’t say much — go to school at Texas, become friends with Matthew McConaughey, wear dreads, smoke weed and steal flatscreens. You know, the standard M.O. It’s all quite boring.
What’s interesting, however, is what’s hung on the wall in the background.

Oh, need a closer look. Check it out.

Under Big 12 Champions, it clearly says “1996, 2005, 2008.” And not even under the “South Division” section. Nope, a full-blown Big 12 title. In football. For 2008. Hmph.
I swear I watched Mack Brown’s pathetic non-conference schedule and embarrassing politicking fail him in November. And I swear I saw the mighty Sooners beat the ever-living shit out of Missouri to claim the school’s third straight Big 12 crown.
Like B.I.G. said, maybe it was all a dream. It could happen. After all, the BCS title game never did. Not in my mind.

wow. why don’t they just claim they won the super bowl, too?

You are an idiot. Even Stoops himself said that everyone(oklahoma, tech and texas) will have big 12 champ trophies in the trophy case this year. Its called regular season title. Big 12 gives out two trophies in the big 12. One is called regular season title and the other is called big12 champ trophy for winning big12 champ game. Oklahoma did not win the big12 they tied with two other teams and because of a tie breaker were sent to big12 title game. You can bitch and moan all you want the fact remains texas will be given a trophy for this years big12 regular season co-champs. So will oklahoma and tech. And dont give me this bs that oklahoma will make any mention of a tie on their walls.

The Big 12 recognizes “co-champions” in all sports, and presents trophies. So Kansas has a “co-North Division champion” trophy for football in 2007 and Nebraska the same for 2008.
Ironically, it started when the Texas men’s basketball team didn’t get a trophy the same day it clinched a conference co-championship with Kansas a few years back.
So the “Whiny Orange” title continues to stick.

Hey Tom,
Nice skewing of the facts. In fact it was Kansas who didn’t receive a trophy and whined, not Texas. The Horns had already clinched at least a share of the Big 12 title so the trophy was sent to Austin for the final game of the season, well we lost that game but were at home so we were given the trophy. Kansas went home and whined. Don’t just change history because it suits your point.

Fantastic stuff…Did you even realize that co-champions of a division are actually awarded a share of the Big XII regular season championship, or do you simply choose to wallow in journalistic mediocrity?

I agree: Mack Brown is a whiny puss.
It must suck to be his bitch.

You feel happy claiming that “regular-season” title? Wow, the standards in Austin are low. If the roles were reversed I would be absolutely embarrassed if Stoops, OU or Joe C. tried to claim a Big 12 title — regular season or otherwise — if they didn’t with the Big 12 title game.
OU got spanked by KSU in the 2003 Big 12 title game. You think any of us claim winning the Big 12 that season? Yeah, right. Maybe it’s technically written somewhere that OU won the south regular-season title in 2003, but I don’t know anyone that goes around claiming it.

Dirt Monkey,
You’ve been inhaling meth fumes too long.
The whorns didn’t “claim” anything.
It is awarded by the Big 12.

Funny, because I could have sworn the Mizzou/Oklahoma game never happened.

Isnt even more lame to claim a championship when you weren’t even the best team in your division? i.e. OU
Oklahoma was able to back into a championship game they didnt deserve strictly bc they had an easier schedule than Texas.
Texas dominated them straight up on a neutral field(outscoring OU 35-14 from the end of the 1st quarter onward).
Of the three teams tied at the end of the season Texas was the only one which had to play both away from the safety of their home stadium.
So its very simple:
1. They were the best team in the Big 12 in 2008
2. They dominated both teams that played in the make believe championship game
3 THE BIG 12 OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZES THEM AS 2008 CHAMPIONS

Actually you have it backwards, KU didnt get the trophy that year, but you’re incorrect about the whole trophy thing to begin with. There are not multiple trophies and there never has been. Texas doesnt have a 2008 Big 12 football trophy but they are listed in the official standings as co-champions.

How big is the asterisk on UT’s co-trophy?
February 16th, 2009 @11:23 am
Dirt Monkey, what you should be embarrassed about is 1) backing into the Nat’l Title game and 1A) representing our conference so poorly in BCS games. THAT is embarrassing.
February 16th, 2009 @11:32 am
Um, 3 things:
1)If you want to be taken seriously do some research, in the event of a tie, ALL teams in 1st place are recognized as co-champions.
2)Everyone with a brain knows Texas was the best team in the Big 12 in 2008.
3) When you are not the best team in your division, have been dominated by your rival in 4 of the last 5 games, have single-handidly made the conference a national laughing-stock, and last won a relative bowl game when your starting QB was in elementary school… it looks pretty stupid to go around bumping your chest about whose title is more legit
February 16th, 2009 @11:40 am
“How big is the asterisk on UT’s co-trophy?”
Slightly smaller than the asterik next to OU’s so-called national championships, none of which were won without the aid of professional players from Texas.
Fact: OU has never won a championship without committing major NCAA violations for paying the top recruits in Texas, and has been on NCAA probation almost twice as long as any other team in college football history, now THAT is something to be embarrassed about.
February 16th, 2009 @11:47 am
In addition to the BCS national title game, the UT-Tech game did not happen last year, either.
February 16th, 2009 @1:12 pm
Oddly enough….I don’t see UT claiming themselves big 12 champ in 2002 (even though they tied OU in the south…nor did Colorado claim themselves big 12 champs, even though they tied for the best “regular” season record). Nebraska isn’t claiming themselves the 1996 big 12 champ despite finishing with a better “regular” season record that UT. Face it UT….your coach is a little crybaby…

AkersN: “Oklahoma was able to back into a championship game they didnt deserve strictly bc they had an easier schedule than Texas.”
Seriously? The whole reason OU got in instead of Texas was because OU had a harder schedule.
Cincinnati + TCU > UTEP + Rice.

It looks like all the Texas fans are correct in recalling that texas was a co-champion in the Big 12 in 2008. Just as much a fact is the fact that perception counts more than reality. NO Where do I see co-champion. I see Big 12 Champs, giving the false impression that texas was the Big 12 Chamnpion. False.
