So, the big man gets paid. According the Tulsa World, Bob Stoops’ contract was extended to 2015, making his seven-year contract worth more than $30 million. I have no problem with that. He’s brought so much pride and success to this university that it’s hard to put a price tag on it. This pay raise, voted on by the university’s regents, also saw both basketball coaches receive pay pumps, as well as their staffs.
The World picked out the juicy parts of the news, which is all we really care about … that and erasing the memory of that effin’ Florida game. Stoops could also make as much as $5 million in the 2011 season alone, should he remain in Norman that long.
An additional bonus, termed in the contract an “Additional Stay Benefit,” of $800,000 will be paid following Jan. 1, 2011. Factoring in the $700,000 bonus already in place, as well as the automatic $200,000 annual private-funds bump also built into the contract, Stoops stands to make $4.875 million in 2011. And that’s before performance-based bonuses also included in the deal. Should the Sooners compete for the Big 12 championship and a BCS bowl that season, as is typical under the coach, Stoops would clear the $5 million mark.
But how easily we forgot where we were 12 years ago. Trust us, RDK was in school during dark days of the Blake era. So it really pisses me off when I see newspaper “readers” — more like hillbilly busybodies with Internet access and no job — say the damndest things in the comments section.
And, really, it’s my own fault. You go to and somewhat major newspaper site and the comments are full of the most asinine opinions this side of Ask A Ho. I’ve collected a random sampling — really, I couldn’t stand to read anymore — of this Web-based jackassery. Any of the typos or grammar errors are from them, not the genius of RDK.
- keep supporting the $5 millon doallar man so your year on year tuition wil go up 11% while other commodities go down.
- In it’s last five BCS Games, OU IS 0-5. For a loser, Mr. Stoops has hit the jackpot! Every game lost means big bucks for him!His overall bowl record is 4-6, with narrow wins over Oregon, Arkansas, and FSU. OU did win handily in the 2003 Rose Bowl, over Wash, St.
- Too bad donors don’t see the importance of an education verses athletics.
- would be good to see a couple bowl wins come out of all that money… I hope he doesn’t CHOKE on all of it.
- Anybody ever see the HOUSE the guy lives in? My God! Why do we make royalty out of overrated football coaches? I think it says something about our own sense of self-esteem. By the way, Stoops is NOT the most overrated coach in history. Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a coach named Bo Shembeckler, who won a lot of regular season games by rolling over a lot of undermanned opponents, but was something like two-for-career in bowl games.
For full disclosure, there were plenty of people supporting the school, but I’m sure there was more of the above than anything about OU. But the misinformation in those reader comments was shocking. If you didn’t know it, President Boren was slaughtering bunnies to build Stoops a platinum mansion on Main Street.

Thank God for Mr. Coach Bob Stoop! Seriously, this man is a football genius. I don’t care how many bowl games we win, I’m just proud of going to a bowl every year. I was attending games in the ’90’s as well, and I would not want to give up Coach Stoops for any of the other NCAA coaches out there. Seriously, those morons are either OSU fans, or they are the ones who know nothing about OU football (i.e. think that losing a Natl Championship is a failure of a season). Just ask Tennesee, or Miami, or Nebraska fans if they would consider that a failure and see what kind of response you would get. I’m sure their fans would be thrilled to GO to a National Championship game and root for their school! Boomer Sooner. And on behalf of all the real OU fans, Stoops, ignore the knuckleheads, and laugh all the way to the bank, buddy, you’ve earned it!

The ’90s were absolutely brutal. The only bright spots were an upset win over Texas via Jarrail Jackson and the opening victory against Syracuse in ‘98 … the McNabb puke incident, in fact.

I too was attending OU and in an internship with the Daily during the Schnelly/Blake era . My job was to cover the OU football practice report. So here I am with press tags around my neck, sideline access, and I got to watch the worst OU football ever played (SIGH). For all of those who think Stoops is overrated, just remember The King won 3 NC’s in 17 years, but he played for 6, and he also had a 10 year drought between ‘75 and ‘85.

I’d give Stoops all $20 in my bank account and my first born.

I’d give Stoops Tits’ first born as well.

Dirt Monkey, you are correct! The misinformation in those reader comments is shocking but I’ll bet most of them came from Blowsu aggies.
The real problem I have is w/ the so called Sooner fans that get pissed off about Coach Stoops’ bowl record & call for OU to get rid of him. If OU got rid of him there would be 50 schools fire their coach IMMEDIATELY just at the chance to land Stoops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have a great coach & are no longer dealing with the DARK AGE of Sooner football. Be thankful for God sakes!
It’s funny that most of the articles written about Coach Stoops’ raise don’t mention the fact that the athletics dept. gave the school $7 million…
BOOMER!!!

Yeah, because the athletic dept saved so much more money before Bob came. Something like negative $3 million a year. I bet they were able to give lots of $7 million checks to education at that rate.

Always humorous to hear the rednecks…interestingly, Bear Bryant lost 7 bowl games in a row at one point…Tom Osborne lost 7 bowl games in a row…and then reeled off 3 NCs in 4 years.
