Gravy Train and I took our lumps — and then some — during our college years in the mid-’90s thanks to John Blake. Our patience and loyalty paid off in spades with the hiring of Bob Stoops. We were rewarded with the 2000 national title and a mountain of Big 12 titles. We all knew 2005 would be a bit rough, but didn’t know how bad until that game against TCU … much like the game against BYU.
Much like 2005, we traveled to the coast to play a big name with good (not great) talent. We got beat. But then we eventually rebounded with Big 12 titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and an appearance, albeit a loss, in the 2009 BCS title game.
Where am I going with this? Time to nut up and earn your fandom.
It’s easy to cheer on a winner. Year in, year out, you’re never disappointed. You could be one of those heartless fans that will just switch allegiance year-to-year. League-to-league. Game-to-game. What fun is that? If winning comes that easy, it’s not nearly as satisfying. What fun would college football be if we won the national title ever year? OK, pretty efffin’ awesome, so that’s a bad example.
Are we happy with our current situation? No. Are we befuddled by some of the coaching and play-calling? Absolutely. But right now, RDKers, is when you fucking earn your right to enjoy the success. Continue to support this team. Sell out the rest of the games. Don’t puss out and ditch your OU-TX tickets. Trust me, I was tempted. But then I realized this is when the program needs us most.
Don’t be a Wal-Mart/daywalking Sooner fan. Get out there to every game and be proud. We’re 2-2 now, but OU WILL be on top again again. I promise you that. When that happens, you’ll want to know you didn’t sell out. You didn’t bitch and whine. You didn’t turn your back during the tough times. It’ll make success that much more rewarding. You earn it now.

SOONER!!!!! I have never and will never sell out on the Sooners. Another BS aspect of fandom is this “they’re my 2nd favorite team” crap. WTF!? There are no second favorites! And to all you bitches who clamore every effin year that “this coordinator needs to be fired” or “this player needs to be benched”……….SHUT YOUR ASS!! How many people did we hear calling for Chuck Longs head? Well, he’s gone and now they’re bitchin about Wilson. The grass isn’t always greener folks. If you’re that great of a football mind, then why isn’t your ass out there on the sidelines makin’ $250K a year. And I won’t even comment on the morons call our head coach “Bob Stoopid” or asking for his head. If this is you, you’re an idiot. What exactly did you expect from a team that lost it’s entire O-line, Heisman QB, the best TE in the NCAA, and then eventually it’s biggest WR threat? We’ve lost 2 games against ranked opponents, on the road, by a total of 2 points. Quit your bitchin and FAN UP!!! This is the exact scenario where everyone will pick Fexas to kill us, and we end up going down there and winning!! And I’ll be there to see it either way! Whew, i’m done.:)

Chuck Long gave me his live strong bracelet when I rang up his liquor purchase in the summer of 2004.

What does Chuck Long have to with this?

I am glad you delved into this. It is has been amazing over the last 14 years(damn I am getting old) to see how easy it was to get tickets in the 90’s to them becoming almost an impossibility now. At one point I showed up in Norman with 12 free tickets from 4 different sources. It was just me and another die hard fan. I had tried to get more folks to come, but, lets face it, most “Sooner Fans” now, could have given two fucks less when Blake was in office. It was 1998 and we were playing Iowa State. It took twelve QB changes until Patrick Fletcher took over and guided us to a sloppy win. Now that we are 2-2 tickets are starting to come easy again. I see people wanting to get rid of them almost daily. At least they still want money and are not just giving them away for free, like in the 90’s. Oh Yeah, I sold the 10 remaining to a scalper who was standing on Jenkins.

I in some ways enjoy these years more than others. There’s actually excitment in the period between the Texas game and the bowl game. The defense is very good (despite what some think), and will keep us in every game, but I would be shocked if we did not drop 1 or 2 more games.

You can offload those unwanted tejas tickets on me you unworthy bastards. Those bitches have been hard to get for less than a whole paycheck.

I think it was Jake Sills who took over in that ISU game in ‘98, right?

Bust it out Brown!
Well said. I will confess that I said Kevin Wilson should dust off his resume. We have seen this level of play calling too many times, too many lost bowl games from uninspired play calling and failure to exploit defenses. I’d like to know what is going on with that, straight up.

No, it was Fletch. I promise. For some unknown reason that game is burned into my mind, forever. I can’t get it out. You’re just gonna have to trust me DM.

You’re wrong, dude. I was at that game and his throw to Gerald Williams to secure the win is burned into MY brain. Maybe you’re thinking of a different season, but it wasn’t 1998 versus ISU.
For good measure, check out pages 284-285 of the Oklahoma Football Encyclopedia.
