Aside from the redneck Oklahoma fans that think Bob Stoops should be fired, most somewhat-intelligent fans can still appreciate what he’s done with Oklahoma and his restoration of the program. And, obviously, other schools see it too as this week was the annual “Stoops to Atlanta” game. This year’s contestant? Notre Dame.
Now, if Bob Stoops wants to coach the Irish — he doesn’t — than that’s what he should do. But the fact that so many Notre Dame supporters and “journalists” released complete false information about Stoops’ interest in the job makes these d-bags more delusional than TexAgs regulars. And that’s saying something.
- Bob Stoops has agreed to the deal, which will be announced this week
- Bob Stoops is meeting with Notre Dame after his grandmother’s funeral in Youngstown, Ohio, on Tuesday
- Bob Stoops asked for lower academic standards and the board at Notre Dame wouldn’t comply
- Bob Stoops and/or his agent met with Notre Dame officials in Atlanta (ironic)
- Bob Stoops’ “nephew” claims that deal is 95 percent likely by end of the week
- Bob Stoops hates Kermit (OK, I added that one for dramatic effect)
This was the constant drivel coming from “media” outlets, moderators, admin and posters from such sites as Irish Sports Daily, Irish Illustrated, the Unofficial Home of Notre Dame Football, Irish Envy and more. And those are just off the top of my head.
Even ESPN NFL writer Adam Schefter reported that, despite Bob Stoops’ constant denials, his “sources” said he’s still going to South Bend. Translation? Bob, you’re a liar.
Call Stoops an asshole. Call him a loyalist. Call him a shitty head coach. But in his 10-plus years in Norman, has anyone ever questioned his word (save for injuries)? He’s pretty much a straight-shooter. He isn’t Nick Saban, Mike D’Antonio or Gravy Train’s junior-high basketball coach (made up).
Because of all the false reports and misinformation, Stoops was forced to address the rumors during a media conference call on Monday afternoon. Then on Monday night. Then again on Tuesday after Schefter went on-air with his “sources.” And yet again on Oklahoma City radio Wednesday evening. After Schefter’s report, Stoops had no options left but to call him out. Mike Jones of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram did a good job of recounting Stoops’ lack of trust in today’s journalism.
Schefter, via Twitter, did offer this hollow apology: “People I listened to you yesterday about Bob Stoops were wrong. He is not leaving Oklahoma. I’ll go back to sticking with NFL now.” Not a retraction from ESPN. Not an apology. Throw the shit against the wall and let’s see what sticks. Who the hell cares what’s truth anymore.
“How unprofessional,” Stoops said Wednesday. “I saw the report Tuesday morning and I’m thinking someone has sold this guy [ESPN’s NFL reporter Adam Schefter] a bill of goods. Someone is trying to get this guy fired — because he got nothing right.”
And all this bullshit I trace back to once source: insane Notre Dame Irish fans, who still have unrealistic expectations of their program, tradition and history. They want to so badly be relevant again that they’ll believe just about anything that has them making some “big-name” hire.
From a program that had some down-trodden years in the ’90s, here’s some advice: you don’t need a big name. Do your research. Talk to everyone at every level. Hire a young, promising up-and-coming coordinator. Everyone wanted Jim Donnan to be hired in 1998 when Boo Blake was rightfully canned. I’ll be the first to admit, when they announced “Bob Stoops,” I was like, “who?”
But, really, what the hell do I care? You’ve courted our coach, what, three times now? He’s NOT your savior. Quit ruining my week. Oh, and enjoy your DBFOTW award. You fucks deserve it.

Wikipedia:
Fifty years after Brennan’s appointment (1954-1958), one could look back at Notre Dame’s hiring policies and notice a curious pattern: the recurrent hiring of inexperienced coaches in the wake of legends. Brennan following Leahy; Gerry Faust following the hall-of-fame tandem of Parseghian and Devine; and, finally, Davie following Lou Holtz. In each case the Irish had hired a youthful coach with no experience as a head coach, and in each case the choices led to bitter disappointment on the field.
Just putting that out there…

Assuming Wikipedia is correct, I don’t see another option. Obviously hiring “proven” coaches (e.g., Willingham, Weis) has not worked. Unless they get Saban or Meyer, think big picture and build the program back the right way.
Then again, they can suck forever for all I care. There are posts on those boards last night and today that STILL think they’re getting Stoops.

Delusional.
I agree, a young talented coach, is their only hope. I think they will be hard pressed though. Unfortunately for them the Athletic Director’s office must be totally unable to recognize talent.
You may or may not remember the 90s, when Notre Dame had a sweet TV deal. NBC had an exclusive with Notre Dame to broadcast EVERY GAME. Sadly they sucked and I’m sure NBC lost money having to carry that stinker every week.

What’s the deal now? NBC just does every home game? I know they still have the deal.

Why not throw huge money at O-Saban bin Laden? That guy has shown repeatedly that he’ll leave anywhere for more money.

I thought they were looking at Switzer now?

While were at it…
How about ND change their nickname? Fighting Irish? WTF does that have to do with anything?
