That’s right, it’s never too early to talk about 2010. After all, 2009 never happened, so let’s move this effin’ clock forward and get back to winning Big 12 titles and choking in bowl games. It’s how we do.
Anyway, according to NationalChamps.net, OU is ranked No. 16 in their super preseason 2010 poll. After this season, I suppose that’s respectable. But how is a Colt McCoy-less Texas ranked No. 7? Hmmm. And a Tebow-less Florida at No. 4?
Other Big 12 teams included were Nebraska (No. 12) and Missouri (No. 25). And that’s it. But you can hit the jump and find the full rankings, plus a brief 2010 preview by clicking on each team name. Hey, it’s better than nothing, right?
What’d they say specifically about your Sooners? They said we’d be strong on the defensive front (no surprise) and at receiver (big surprise, but I guess we can’t get worse, can we?).
This could easily be an NFL-level defensive line. The passing game did not take a back seat when Bradford went down. Many stepped up, including Ryan Broyles as he hauled in close to 1,000 receiving yards. As usual, the secondary is blessed with depth, talent and experience.
The passing game didn’t suffer when Bradford went down? If you say so. OK, maybe I should have read this thing through before starting this post. Eff. Well, we’re almost done so let’s tough it out, ladies.
On to the “concerns” … and they list linebackers? We may or may not have Ryan Reynolds back (NCAA appeal). And we should most likely have Travis Lewis back. But they clearly don’t know about the cyborg that is Ronnell Lewis. Add in Austin Box and Tom Wort, and I think this group is a strength. Big weakness will absolutely be at OL — and possibly WR — next year.
Two new starting LBs will have to step into the mix, which has generally never been a problem. Mid-January will answer the biggest question when the Sooners find out how many top players (upwards of 5-7) skip off early to the NFL.
My bet is that only DT Gerald McCoy leaves. An outside chance of Beal leaving as he’s the only one who hasn’t outright said he is or plans to stay for 2010.
